How long will you have to wait to get the employees health insurance coverage?

Whenever an employee gets covered under any of the health insurance plans through his or her employer, there could be a waiting period. Your employer’s health insurance plan could be specific and may have some eligibility criteria. You have to wait to become eligible as per the predetermined criteria. Thus till the time comes you may have to pay the entire cost of medical treatment from your own pocket.

What then is the typical waiting period for an employee trying for insurance coverage through his or her employer? The Kaiser Family Foundation undertook a survey recently to find out the period. It was found that the average wait for any employee in the smaller establishments where the aggregate number of employees is below 200 is around 2.1 months. If on the other hand you take the overall average of all firms in the market it will come to around 1.5 months. The waiting period is for both Individual health insurance as well as the Family health insurance plans.

While the average life span of human beings is gradually increasing thanks to the enormous development of medical science, the number of retired employees is also expanding rapidly. The Government sponsored medicare plan is available for those who are 65 years or above. Till you reach that age it has to be your own company who would provide you insurance coverage.
